We continually update our species names to reflect recent taxonomic changes or by simply correctly identifying plants in our inventory. For a list of the updated species names, please follow this link: taxonomic changes. In determining the
taxonomy of the plants we sell, we rely on experts in the field, a
number of botanical books, and our
experience. We suggest these resources to anyone who wants more
information on the species that we sell.
We recommend
Rainbow Gardens Bookshop as a source
for books.
General
Taxonomy
We accept
the current names for most species that we
offer for sale. There are some notable
genera or species that we disagree with
the current taxonomic classification.
For example, we reject Rowley's concept
of the genus Adenium and instead accept
a long-standing framework of 8 species
with several species nova and
subspecies, as well as a cadre of
hybrids. We do not
accept the move of the genus Schizobasis
into Drimia or the incorporation of Monadenium into Euphorbia. For most other species, we
use the resources given below for our descriptions.

Euphorbias
Beyond Eggli (2002), we have relied on a number of people, including John Lavranos, Mike Gilbert, Philippe Bisseret, Meena Singh, Gerhard Marx, and Susan Carter to help us sort out the Euphorbias. Additional resources include:
Singh, M., 1994, Succulent Euphorbiaceae of India: New Delhi, India.

Haworthias

Genus: Umdaus Press, Hatfield, South
Africa.
We have species that
Bayer (1999) no longer considers viable,
and we list these either among the
hybrids or in parentheses [e.g.,
Haworthia reticulata (ambigua)]. We also have begun to expand past the Bayer (1999) framework, incorporating some of Breuer's names as well with notation to that effect. We also rely on Gerhard Marx and Vincent de Vries for help with this complicated genus.

Monadenium
Our primary reference on this wonderful genus is Eggli (2001) with heavy reliance on:
Bally, P.R.O., 1961, The genus Monadenium: Benteli Publishers, Berne, Switzerland.
Pachycaul Trees
For most pachycaul
trees, we use the Eggli volume on
Dicotyledons. Several specialty volumes
are also useful, including:

Museums of Kenya, Nairobi, Kenya.
